Technology has served as a base on which civilization rests and is sustained, for centuries, since early man made the first crude tools and in implements. Different technology pieces have served and still serve important purposes for mankind, from the basic such as hygiene/ grooming and agricultural purposes to the complex like space exploration/ data storage and computation. There are a lot of factors that necessitate technological advances by man. The need for more comfort and more productivity is one and perhaps the most pressing., Also the need to tame deadly diseases and epidemics or as in this case the quest by the military to make necessary advancements in war tech or get ahead of their counterparts. All the inventions listed here are the brainchildren of the military, most specially created
to aid war efforts though today they have found important civilian uses. And perhaps a large part of future technological advancements will be carried out by the military.
10. Jeep
Jeep was invented by the military to take care of their need for a light motor vehicle capable of performing in all theaters of combat. It was mainly employed by the United States and its allies during world war 2. It was made available to the civilian society soon after the war and has been an effective and reliable means of transportation, serving purposes that make it almost irreplaceable.
9. Aviator Sunglasses
Pilots had to battle problems vision problems, during flights which were a direct result of the Sun's glaring rays, which are unavoidable by pilots at the altitudes at which airplanes fly. The sunglass was invented to take care of the situation and it did quite effectively. It was soon discovered useful by civilians for different outdoor activities such as hunting hiking and others or just to protect the sight from damaging sun rays. And it seems today that it serves more civilian purposes than military.
8. The Duct Tape
The military invented this to carter for their need of sealing ammunition cases in any weather. The new invention was capable of resisting water and dirt and also found repairing uses for soldiers during combat including military equipment vehicles and weapons. Today it has become a common item of use, serving numerous non- military purposes.
7. The Superglue
This is one of the many worlds changing inventions that were discovered entirely by chance. During world war 2 there arose a need for creating clear plastic gun sights for weapons. The research to take care of this need led eventually to the discovery of the duct tape. Even though it served no military purpose after its invention, it was soon seen SD useful by the public and has since been well employed in gluing and bonding purposes which other glue typed are practically incapable of serving.
6. Drones
Drones, although used for a host of civilian purposes like aviation and photography, was originally invented by the military to help carry out field operations like surveying enemy camp spyware and other military jobs deemed too dangerous to be carried out by humans. It also served in the launching of missiles and bombs. And today It continues to serve most if not all the military purposes for which it was invented.
5.The Microwave
A man named Percy Spencer invented the microwave during world war 1. And like the aforementioned invention, the superglue was also discovered by accident. Its inventor discovered the underlying working principle for it when a bar of candy in his pocket was melted by microwave radiation. Today millions if not more of homes rely on the services provided by the microwave oven, courtesy of military creativity during world war 1.
4. Penicillin
Most know Alexander Flemming as the inventor or rather the discoverer of the penicillin. But the healing powers of the wonder substance was harnessed by other researchers. It was heavily relied on during the 2nd world war to help treat injured soldiers and also help inhibit bacterial growth. It has become today one of the commonest medical substances we depend on today
3. Digital Photography
The digital camera was created to aid the military in spying. It was attached to spy satellites to achieve this. It will proved it'd worth in military hands. Today we rely on it for a host of important activities and necessities as it has effectively replaced its analog counterpart.
2. G.P.S
The global positioning system is a global satellite that provides geolocation to a G.P.S receiver anywhere on or near the globe. It was invented by the United States military in the 1970s. It soon found its way to the civilian society who has been usefully employed for purposes such as (tele)communications, solo travel, public safety, disaster relief and a host of others.
1. The Internet
This world-changing invention that more than 90% of the world's population indispensably relies upon whether directly or indirectly can be traced to the 1960s, when the United States federal soot mandated research to develop robust more reliable communication computer networks.
The internet gradually evolved from the ARPANET which had since been used to interconnect regional academic and military networks. Since its invention, it has been used widely by mankind for numerous indispensable purposes, and it may be right to say that there are few inventions if any that has positively impacted human civilization as it ha
